A failing hard drive, a computer to migrate, files deleted by mistake : in those moments you need a simple tool that works on any machine, with no command line. That’s exactly why we built Backup tool, a free data backup and recovery utility, double-clickable, for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Lightweight build (≈140 KB) — Windows / macOS / Linux. Free.

Backup tool automatically scans every partition and volume, then lists the real user accounts it finds — including on a dead Windows booted from a live CD (Hiren’s / WinPE), and even old Windows XP profiles. For each user it isolates the “human” data : Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures/Videos/Music, mail (Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail), browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, Safari), SSH/GPG keys and cloud folders.
- Cross-platform : Windows (XP → 11, even on a live CD), macOS and Linux.
- Bilingual French / English interface, with no command line at all.
- Choose your destination (external SSD, network folder…), tidy layout :
ComputerName / User / category. - Automatic resume : already-copied files are skipped. Progress bar, CSV manifest, report and log.
Recover lost files (PhotoRec built in)
Beyond copying, the tool bundles PhotoRec (CGSecurity’s well-known open-source recovery engine) to recover deleted files or data from a formatted, damaged or “RAW” partition. Two modes : graphical (qphotorec) or guided command line, available on all three systems.
The default “common + office” profile targets the most useful formats : PDF, images, archives, e-mail… and especially the modern Office formats : .docx, .xlsx, .pptx (plus .docm/.xlsm/.pptm and OpenDocument .odt/.ods/.odp). We validated recovery end to end : a deleted .docx file is found again and correctly named.
Built for the field
- Keep-awake : the computer stays awake during the whole backup and the whole recovery, even when it runs for hours.
- Optional remote monitoring via RustDesk, launched automatically when copying starts.
- Automatic machine sheet : system, hardware, network, MAC addresses, known Wi-Fi networks.
How to use it
- Windows : double-click
Sauvegarde.hta. - macOS : right-click
Sauvegarde.app→ Open (once, for Gatekeeper). - Linux : double-click
Sauvegarde.desktop(requireskdialogorzenity).
The package is intentionally lightweight : it ships the launchers and engines. For recovery, drop the portable PhotoRec binary into the recovery/ folder (a LISEZ-MOI.txt gives you the link); for remote monitoring, add RustDesk. Everything is explained in the included README.
